Kosta Boda is one of the world’s leading brands of glassware and art glass. Technology and an understanding of glass have been refined there in the heart of the forests in the Swedish province of Småland ever since 1742. Their glassware is vibrant, bold, innovative and provocative, stretching the boundaries of glass blowing techniques.
Many designers at Kosta Boda are some of the most renowned – not just in Sweden, but worldwide, such as Bertil Vallien, Kjell Engman and Goran Warff. Their common denominator is a passion for exploring the possibilities of glass, always stretching the limits of what is feasible. The techniques used are both classical and brand new, often developed by the craftspeople in the glassworks as they work on transforming the designers’ ideas into products. It can take up to 15 years of training to reach the rank of master glass blower at Kosta Boda, so these really are some of the most talented glass artists in the world! The close dialogue between the designers and skilled craftspeople takes place on a daily basis forming a strong foundation for creating unique glassware to delight people today and future generations. Goran Warff is the grand old man of Kosta Boda designers. Few, if any, have such a deep feeling for the glass melt as Warff, who has always shown special interest in preserving the traditional skills of the master craftsmen in glassblowing and glass cutting. The play of light within the clear volume of the glass and the endless optical phenomena that occur as the glass diffracts the light are a recurring theme in Warff's art and design work. He gets his inspiration from the most diverse sources, not least from the animal kingdom and the world of music and entertainment. Ulrica Hydman-Vallien joined Kosta Boda in 1972. One of Sweden’s best known and most popular artists, whose unmistakable designs can be seen on Ericsson mobile phones and the tails of British Airway’s airplanes, among other places. Ulrica Hydman-Vallien’s most important form of expression is through her glass designs, however, which also played a large part in Kosta Boda’s success in the 1980s and 1990s. She paints her striking and humorous designs straight onto the glass with free and unrestrained energy. View Ulrica Hydman-Vallien's glass creations |
