Helen Chalmers creates glorious, technicolour glass earrings using lampwork in her studio in Edinburgh. The diverse colours of the world are the main inspiration for Helen's collections. Her pieces are evocative of travel, exotic places and wanderlust.
The versatility of hot glass means that a wide colour palette and an infinite variety of decoration and form is possible. Fine details and accents are created by the use of enamels, gold, silver and manipulated glass.
The use of hot glass and supplementary materials created by an oxygen/propane mix flame is known as 'lampworking'. This technique dates back to Ancient Egypt, where oil lamps were the heat source. Lampwork differs from fusing and casting in that the whole making process is by hand in the flame, before being kiln annealed for strength and durability.
